Invitation to The World of Tomorrow 2008-2009

The past is what bonds us- the future leads us
In today’s hectic world we are unable to fully set our sights on tomorrow. Yet the world of tomorrow will be largely determined by what we do (and don’t do) today. De Baak is organizing a series of exclusive working conferences for strategic decision-makers, to enable them to meet with prominent thinkers and up-and-coming leaders and examine the developments in the world. Which underlying trends are going to change how the world looks in the coming decades?
Overview
The program will focus on getting acquainted with and exchanging ideas on the subjects broached. It is aimed exclusively at upper management and directors, who will participate by personal invitation. The program will take place in an intimate atmosphere with an emphasis on mutual inspiration. The number of participants will be strictly limited to ensure that the maximum amount of benefit is gained from the exchange of ideas. The translation of insights into practice will also be addressed.
The World of Tomorrow will address four main themes: Global Politics, Communal Politics, Sexual Politics and Scientific Politics.
The program comprises a full agenda that is divided over four two-day conferences. The conferences will be held in prominent locations in Europe and the working language will alternate between Dutch and English.
The World of Tomorrow focuses on four essential themes, each accompanied by their own developments and paradoxes.
Program
Global Politics - September 18 – 19, 2008, Amsterdam
The world is homogenizing – for better or for worse. We are becoming more and more closely connected through financial ties, ideas and networks. The balances of power are shifting, which evokes new opposing forces. What will the new global society look like, and what consequences will this have for us and our organizations?
The focus of this session will be on geopolitics and the international economy. How are Russia and China developing in relation to Europe? And what does the future hold for Western democracy?
Sexual Politics - October 30 – 31, 2008, Paris
The emancipation of women appears to be complete in the Western world, which has profound consequences for the man’s role in fatherhood. Today’s children have more freedom than the generations before them, but do they still have a future? Or will the mental climate be determined by ageing generations?
’Personal’ comes under the microscope in this session. The world is becoming more and more individual, and everyone can make a virtual representation of themselves. At the same time, no emotion seems safe from commercial gain. Will we rent robots in the future to fulfill our sexual needs, as experts predict? Or does this breach our moral boundaries?
Communal Politics - November, 27 – 28 2008, London
Spiritual life is flourishing more than ever. Religion is growing throughout the world and even the non-religious are looking for meaning. Where will our morality come from? And what can we expect to see in a society that allows room for different religions and beliefs? In this session we will talk to newcomers who ask challenging questions of Western society. As globalization spreads and migrants settle all over the world, the question arises of what unites us. How can we live both independently and side-by-side?
Scientific Politics - January 15 and 16, 2009, Eindhoven
The world is dominated by high-tech innovations, and technological advances are accelerating rapidly. Science is making greater leaps than ever before, as too are art and design. What seemed impossible yesterday will be a commodity tomorrow. In the vicinity of the High Tech Campus and the internationally renowned Design Academy, we will examine the importance of the artist as a conductor of our fears and desires. Which ideas and scientific discoveries are going to change and enrich our lives?
