The Power of Curiosity

Interview with Iulian Ernuteanu

Romania, a business environment that couldn’t be more different than Holland.A country that only recently started the massive transformation from total statecontrol to an open market society. Iulian Ernuteanu, Romanian, is the directorof a successful Romanian telecom business. He also devotes much energy toeducational projects and trainings because of a passion for telling others what helearned from his business career, his NLP education and his Qi Gong practice. And also from his collaboration with de Baak. He has confidence in the vision thathas grown from this unique mixture, because it works.

But not everything works smoothly in Romania: "Changes bring a great dealof uncertainty and people have to deal with it. A lot of people are struggling tosurvive, focused on basic necessities, and continually battling with ineffectivesystems. That drains a lot of energy out of people, bringing pressure, hostilityand emotional stress. Recent history is still very tangible and present in all walksof life. Management is often authoritarian. The boss seems to be the expert whoknows everything and is always right. So making decisions for yourself is a painfulprocess."

Iulian has a different approach. ‘It’s in my nature to be curious about everythingand willing to try things. And to be relaxed about that, enjoy the effort. That is
an attitude that I want to teach others. Business is always about helping people tomake decisions and changes. In our society, we need to learn fast. Especially theyounger generation is starting to ask new questions. But they are often still shy.I work with a lot of young people. My company is open and flexible, everyone cantalk to everyone. Of course I have to take care of the profitability of my business, but I pay attention to creativity and people taking responsibility.’

Iulian Ernuteanu is director of Globtel in Romania. Participants of The New Manager visited his company during their trip abroad.
