From Making Money to the Meaning of Life

By Dr. Charles Savage
The Knowledge Economy won’t just happen, that is, unless you and I and manyothers actively co-create it. It will not replace the industrial model, but insteadwill profoundly transform this model and add a new drive to our world economy, energized by a new sense of ‘meaning’. We know this is badly needed, becausethe industrial model cannot possibly provide all the good jobs needed by ourfast-growing world population. Let’s redefine things from the perspective of theknowledge economy.
The knowledge economy can be a renaissance in culture. Instead of being onlya nice-to-have, culture (music, drama, theater, etc.) will become life-inspiring.
Moreover, many more will want to participate actively, rather than being passivereceivers. This will generate local economic activity. And this is just the beginningof a virtuous spiral upwards, and out of the morass of an industrial worldwhich is incapable of growing with our human needs. Rembrandt captured ourinner light in his wonderful paintings. How can we capture and build upon oneanother’s ‘inner energy’?
Knowledge is no longer just a ‘thing’ to be collected, stored and shared, it is a‘process’ of discovery, connectivity and co-creativity. We find ourselves energizedas we actively build upon one another’s intuitions, hunches, insights and feelings. These developments help move us from wanting ‘money’ so we can have the basicsand luxuries of life, to discovering the role and power of ‘meaning’ as a drivingforce for the knowledge economy. Doesn’t it make more sense to see work as anintegral part of our lives where we can test out our vision, enhance our capabilitiesand contribute to something greater than just the moment? In short, ‘meaningenergizes’. The Germans capture this idea in the wonderful word Synergie. Are you in a co-creative mood? If so, please join the effort.
